It finally happened.
A NASCAR Cup Series driver got fed up enough with Carson Hocevar's driving that he actually approached him after a race for a confrontation, and things got physical.
Of course, that frustration, in this particular instance, was only partially warranted, which actually made it kind of funny. There are probably 20 different drivers who can say they have a genuine beef with Hocevar, and Ryan Blaney might not even be on the list. So it's ironic that he's the one who actually stood up to the driver of the No. 77 Spire Motorsports Chevrolet.
Heck, he even admitted on Denny Hamlin's Actions Detrimental podcast that he wasn't right to place the blame fully on Hocevar for what happened on Saturday night at Bristol Motor Speedway. We kind of figured that would be the case after he saw the replay.
But what happened happened, and what happened afterward happened as well, whether any of it was justified or not.
And it proved something that nobody had really wanted to admit.
Carson Hocevar is ready for anybody willing to fight
The whole narrative surrounding Hocevar has been that he's a punk kid and an arrogant and obnoxious wannabe who is simply here just to sell t-shirts. He's an influencer driver, his act is truly an act, and he doesn't actually care about winning.
Part of that might still be true. He does, after all, have a lower career winning percentage than Harrison Burton. And "bUt mErCh saLEz!!" is literally the only thing his fanbase can use to defend his antics the overwhelming majority of the time.
But absolutely nobody, no matter how vocal about their displeasure with him, had been willing to confront him.
It's sure not because NASCAR is going to penalize them, as they proved this week by announcing that they will not be penalizing Blaney or Hocevar for anything that happened. It's because for as much as they want to believe he's just some punk kid, he's not afraid to fight back.
Regarding the scuffle, Blaney said it himself: "I got my ass kicked."
Hocevar is 6-foot-4. It should surprise absolutely that he was not only willing to fight back, but he held his own. The rest of his competitors all know it, but nobody is brave enough to admit it (or, other than Blaney, brave enough to confront him, for that reason).
Sure, the pit crew involvement did favor him (and, quite frankly, that element of the brawl should, and still might, draw penalties from NASCAR). But he proved that if you want a piece of him, he's not just going to stand there and take it, and he's certainly not going to run and hide.
That's a narrative we can finally set aside.
Sure, he may stand there with that brazen smile on his face and drop one-liner after one-liner to rile up his opponents and sell t-shirts at discounts based on the car numbers of the drivers whose blood pressures he's managed to heighten.
And of course, the more the "gimmick" supposedly "gets old", the more merch he sells, so it's obviously doing what it's intended to do. That element of "influencer driver" is clearly paying off, and quite frankly, if he is just an influencer driver, he has actually significantly raised the bar on performance standards as well, considering how absolutely dreadful so many other influencers (we won't even say drivers...) have performed in this sport.
But now the public knows he's not all talk.
Is there still a debate over whether a driver with one career win (on a superspeedway, no less) is even worth the time and trouble? Absolutely. Because for as much as NASCAR fans want to claim he's "saving the sport" and "moving the needle", him actually doing that is going to take a lot more actual on-track success.
That doesn't change the fact that Blaney just proved why nobody actually wants to get into a scuffle with him. Maybe, just maybe, they're the ones who are all talk.
